Kingdom of Heaven
In the beginning of the movie "Kingdom of Heaven" Balian is a blacksmith. Baron Godfrey of Ibelin, is a knight and reveals to Balian that he is his father. Balian knew nothing of swordsmanship and was never trained to become a knight. His father teaches him how to fight with a sword. Balian quickly learned how to fight with a sword and became very skilled at it. In the movie, that is all that shows of Balian's training.
A knight's Tale
Willliam Thatcher, a peasant, becomes a knight by pretending to be Sir Ector. He trains for the jousting tournament by hanging a hoop on a tree. Then he would try to pierce that hoop with his lance while Roland and Wat pushed a cart with him riding on top of it. He also trained by trying to hit the target with his lance while he was riding on his horse. William trained for his sword tournaments by fighting with Roland and Wat with wooden sticks. After training for one month William becomes extremely skill at jousting and he wins almost every tournament.
Similarities and Differences
William and Balian both trained for a very short time compared to other knights. They both are very quick learners because they only trained for a month, but became extremely skilled at swordsmanship. Balian did not train for jousting tournaments, he was trained to fight in wars, while William trained for tournaments. These are the similarities and differences between the two movies.
